Found throughout North America from Canada all the way south to Guatemala, the American Robin is among the most popular and well-known backyard songbirds. Noted for its habit of searching for earthworms in lawns and for its cheery voice, they are often the first birds to sing in the morning and the last to chatter in the evening. The robin’s most striking feature is its orange breast and belly, which is much more vivid on the male. By early fall, robins in the northeast begin moving south to winter in the Middle Atlantic and Gulf states, while in the northwest, robins generally move to areas of lower alttitude in search of food. However, some robins will winter quite close to home or linger even after snow has fallen, if food supplies such as winter fruits are adequate. Thus, the first robin you see in spring may not have come from too far away.
