Incredibly skilled flyers, hummingbirds can hover in mid-air like tiny helicopters, propelled by wings that beat 53 times per second. They are the only birds on earth that can fly backwards. A single Ruby-throated Hummingbird can consume nectar from over 1,000 flowers in a single day, along with small insects and spiders. These birds are particularly attracted to red, tubular shaped blossoms, but will readily visit sugar-water feeders. During the spring courtship, the male performs a spectacular aerial display, swinging like a pendulum through the air while the female watches quietly.
