About Birds

What is the difference between birding and birdwatching?
They are really the same and describe the observation of birds.  Birding is more frequently used to describe the more formal activity of tracking down different species and recording them in your bird book.  There are many clubs that provide this activity.  If this interests you, check your local Audubon Society.

Can I feed birds in the summer as well as winter?
Yes, but there are a few things you should be aware of.  Suet may melt in hot weather.  The best food to attact the largest variety of birds is Black Oil Sunflower seeds.  Nyjer seeds also attract a great variety of song birds.  Peanuts should be fed in mesh feeders.  Very young birds may choke on them.

How often should a bird feeder be cleaned?
Areas where birds congregate should be cleaned daily of seed husks and left over food to prevent mold forming.  It is a good idea to wear gloves when you do this.  Don't let food fall to the ground as it may attract vermin.  Water should be changed daily to keep mosquitoes away if you do not have a circulating birdbath.  Do not use anti-freeze or salt in the winter.  Best to get a heating unit to keep water from freezing.

Can children participate in birding activities?
Absolutely.  This is a great learning opportunity for children.  It teaches them the value of nature and the wonder of life.
